We’re excited to announce this year’s cohort, who are exemplars of design practice, craft, and leadership for the industry-standard design program we’ve built at IBM.

As we have built the program and practice of design at IBM since 2012, we’ve placed a special emphasis on nurturing great design leaders. Design leaders at IBM must not only be experts in creating delightful human-centered outcomes that drive business results, they must also possess a deep understanding of the technical and business domains in which they work and the resilience to advocate for design-driven change in a complex global enterprise. IBM Design Principals embody all of these qualities.

Design Principal (DP) is the highest non-executive, individual contributor career level for designers at IBM. Candidates for Design Principal were nominated by their business unit and submitted an extensive application form, portfolio of work, and executive references which were peer-reviewed by the IBM Design Leadership Review Board, a council of executive-level design leaders.

On behalf of the IBM Design Leadership Review Board, it’s with great pride that I introduce the 2019 IBM Design Principal appointments.

Expanding design leadership at IBM

With this cohort of IBM Design Principals, our largest ever, we see the continued expansion of our community of design leaders across the company and around the globe. We now have the first-ever DPs in our IBM Studios in Sydney, Australia; Berlin, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; and Tokyo, Japan. We also have DPs in the following organizations: Blockchain, GBS Design, IBM Research, IBM Security, Public Cloud Data & AI, Watson Brand Design, and Watson Media & Weather. We now have a total of 50 active Design Principals at IBM.

Congratulations to our remarkable new IBM Design Principals!
