About Design Fairs and other venues
The new peregrination centres are the Design, Art and Exhibition fairs. The World is full of unmissable events and is impossible to assist to all of them, despite you’re a famous blogger and they pay for your visit.
The opportunity to know when and where is the plan of how to not miss the most important and how to spend the money travelling during this main events. Follow the main Design Blogs that publish the news from all over the world
By one side you can find fairs in each city around the globe and or you are rich or is completely impossible to assist to all. Just having a look at World Design Weeks Webpage you can find which is your next step and you will get stressed just to choose which is your next place to go.
Everybody has his own list of events, Dezeen recommends 6 events every month. Is interesting the list of DHub Barcelona had a Scoop with a list of the most important design exhibitions around, you can find here a good excuse for traveling.
By the other side, there is a moment everybody seems tired of design fairs, last Milano Fair the new was not visiting the fair, Tom Dixon published “First time in 15 years Dixon will not show in Milan this year”, another marketing event seem more interesting like to present the products worldwide rather than in a single event.
Starting in September, the new course 2018–19 is a good excuse to have a look at the most important venues and try to plan how you will spend your money this year.
If we have a chance to go to the south of France we can Visit Hyeres. the popular 13th Design Parade (29/6 — 30/9/18), we can find a good selection of 10 promised designers by an international jury, headed by Philippe Malouin and including Felix Burrichter, Maria Cristina Didero, Erwan Bouroullec, Marianne Goebl and Matylda Krzykowski.
If you can’t visit this places you can always check the pictures at magazines, blogs or though instagram.
If we keep in Barcelona, we can visit at DHub Barcelona «The Best Design of the Year» (5/06 — 22/10/18) an unmissable expo for seeing and understanding what is going on in the world of design today in Spain. It features the shortlisted and prize-winning works of the awards presented by the FAD associations, nearly 500 works and projects.
We can visit the Roca Gallery: ‘Designs for a better world’ exhibition” till 22/10/18. A selection of innovative designs whose objectives are to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged groups curated by Ana Dominguez.
If you have the chance to be in Madrid go to Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas you can see “El trabajo de los díez” the work of Javier Díez and José Luis Díez.(23/03–02/09/2018). If you missed the exhibition you can read about their work though this article at Icon Magazine.
The calendar of Design weeks starts just the first days of September at Sao Paolo (29/08 — 2/9/18), following with Helsinki (6/09 — 16/09/2018) and Paris (7 — 11/09/18) that has his venue with Maison des Object in France.
This year September will be charged with good intentions with the Bangkok Climate Change Conference, that week that all the newspapers speak about climate change and urgent things to do.
Mid-September has London Design Festival (15 — 23/09/18) with 100% Design in London, Valencia Disseny Week (18–21/09/18) and starts the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial (22/09 — 4/11/18) in Turquie. This September also has a surprise at the end Supernova, the innovation conferences held in Antwerp (27 — 30/9/18), Belgium.
Following in Belgium, this year is the time of 26th Biennal Interieur in Kortrijk (18 — 22/10/18). Frederik Delbarthas named Belgium Designer of the year.
Before to start we have several days till October to assist to the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, and The Dutch Design Week (20–28/10/18), their organitzation, the Dutch Design Foundation it said is the largest design event of Northern Europe, were you can see the work of 2600 designers.
In October is time for the office main event: Orgatec (23 — 27/10/18) in Cologne, Germany. If you are in Barcelona in October, don’t miss “La curva mágica: mueble de haya y ratán” (11/10— 11/11/18) an exhibition in Artesania Catalunya.
October was famous for the Tokyo Design Week but after a person died in an accident in 2016, there are no more organizing the fair. The last one was between (26/10 — 7/11/16).
November is for Dubai Design Days (13—16/11/18). And December is for Miami at Design Basel (5 — 9/12/18) in the USA.
This December seems DHub Barcelona is preparing another exhibition “The Advertising Boom. Tin, cardboard and tile posters. 1890–1950” (5 /12— 31/03/2019).
In 2019 will be a big year cause it holds the Setuchi Triennial from Naoshima (26/4 — 4/11/ 2019) in the Japan sea. Everybody is starting booking this summer to visit Japan.
2019 will hold the common Design weeks and fairs, furniture fairs and design venues. Starting in January we can find in Colone, Germany: IMM Colonia (14 — 20/01/19), the international interiors show.
Then in February, we find the Stockholm Design Week in Stockholm, Sweden (4 — 10/02/19). The fair of ceramics in Spain Cevisama in Valencia
(28/1–1/02/19) and the Fair of crafts and products, Ambiente. in Frankfurt, Germany (8–12/02/19). Last year we had the Nomad (8–11/02/18) in St Moritz, Switzerland.
In March it starts the 11th Biennale of Saint-Étienne (03 — 4/19), a small city in France, Saint-Étienne fulfill with interesting proposals over France and the rest of the world.
In April arrives the Salone del Mobile, Cosmit (9–14/04/19). The excuse to enjoy Fuorisalone for a coffee, a good piece of pizza and a Rissoto, but be carefull with the high prizes the city experiment. This year is Euroluce 2019.
In May is time for New York, ICFF, the International contemporary furniture fair (19 — 22/05/2019) , Clerkenwell in London (21 — 23/05/2019). This year it starts also the 26th Biennial of Design in Ljubljana on Eslovenia (24/5 — 29/10/19).
On June arrives Design Basel in Switzerland (11 — 16/06/19) and we will be another time in Summer. Most of this fairs you can go every year, cause they repeat annually or biannually if they are biennial, the problem is those events that only repeat every tree o five years, we will have to wait till Summer 2023 to visit Documenta in Kassel, Germany.
