Virtual Spaces inspired by Design Studios

--

Inspired by Ian Chipchase’s reflections on characteristics of popup studios.

With remote design research work also comes challenges when it comes to setting up an environment that can truly inspire dialogue and engagement with participants.

Collaborative workspaces such as Mural have cleverly reproduced the concept of rooms and boards, which mimic real-life spaces.

As we were thinking through a series of workshops, we needed to find digital equivalents of what would have normally been an in-person experience. How could we functionally reproduce the most typical environments?

Interestingly, for projects that span multiple sessions, the environment can be set up once, creating rituals for the team. Mural in particular lends itself to such a set-up, with a possibility of creating the following rooms, with a new series of boards nested in each for every workshop.

All-Hands

This is the room where all are present to reflect, exchange, explore. For teleconferencing applications which include a whiteboard, this is done within the teleconferencing app. For those that only include a video feed, you may share your screen to show artefacts, agendas or other items to participants. Alternatively, a Mural board may be used to share and invite manipulation, while the sound continues to be managed by the teleconferencing tool.
