Book cover, 50 Shades of Grey

At first glance the cover would give you a sophisticated, mysterious and horror impression. Too many elements are not used here, which makes it look simple. The main focus is on the tie, which is not splitting the plane into exact half, but is still splitting diagonally, leading the eye off the plane, and making it difficult to stay on the picture. Also, the negative space used by the tie makes the tie look bigger than it actually is; emphasised by the shadows.

Monochromatic colour scheme is used which is not very common for book covers; but it is understandable given the title. It also somehow reflects the story genre, as i perceive it, which is mysterious and dark; which makes it interesting too.

The font does not really go well with the context, it looks retro and classic. The text is not uniformly aligned, which leaves the margins non uniformed. There is a subtle bold on “Fifty shades” which forces the ‘grey’ to look more ‘grey’, which goes well with the title.

Overall it is a convincing and interesting book cover design as it gives the essence of the title and the story.
