Reflection on OpenIDEO and Design Thinking

Design thinking, as a concept, has always intrigued me. It’s not just about creating aesthetically pleasing designs but delving deep into the problems and needs of the users. The OpenIDEO case studies provided a comprehensive insight into this process. The three overlapping phases of Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation stood out as a structured approach to innovation.

The Inspiration phase, as described in the Air New Zealand project, emphasized the importance of understanding the user’s problems. It’s fascinating how IDEO spent seven months with Air New Zealand to grasp their vision and values. The airline’s desire to represent their unique culture, rather than just focusing on luxury or scenic beauty, was a testament to the depth of this phase. It’s about digging deep, understanding the core values, and then moving forward.

The Ideation phase, on the other hand, is where the magic happens. It’s about conceptualizing and prototyping. The collaboration between IDEO and Air New Zealand highlighted the importance of this phase. The challenge was not just to enhance the experience for the elite but for every passenger, emphasizing inclusivity.

OpenIDEO’s technological platform offers a new dimension to collaboration, allowing for a broader range of ideas and insights.

  • Human-Centered Design (HCD) Online: The OpenIDEO platform is a testament to the fact that HCD can indeed be conducted online. The platform’s ability to gather insights and ideas from a global community is revolutionary.
  • Challenge on Open IDEO: If I were to run a challenge, it would be about creating sustainable urban spaces that cater to the needs of all age groups.
  • Managing Online Challenges: The dynamics change online. It requires clear communication, structured feedback mechanisms, and ensuring that every voice is heard.
  • Fostering Collaboration: Creating safe spaces online is about building trust. It’s about ensuring transparency, giving credit, and promoting constructive feedback.
  • Combining Expertise: The case studies highlight the importance of combining different perspectives. It’s not just about design; it’s about understanding culture, user needs, and business challenges.

In conclusion, design thinking is not just a process; it’s a mindset. It’s about being empathetic, innovative, and inclusive. The OpenIDEO case studies have reinforced my belief in the power of collaborative design thinking.
