“Seabin” creates a new way of bringing planetary impact to anyone’s reach in order to improve the quality of our oceans

Within my research of what to do in order to reverse the impacts of human pollution and climate change, I came across the Australian green tech startup “Seabin“ which developed a trash bin that can be used inside the ocean to collect the rubbish created by all of us in order to fight the pollution of the ocean.

In fact, plastic pollution of the oceans is a real problem which together with ocean acidification and ocean warming, it is one of the three biggest threats to a healthy ocean. Every year, eight million tons of waste enter the oceans, most of it plastic. This not only affects the ocean health but also people swimming or surfing in the water, which is also how the idea of creating an underwater trash bin started. Two surfers from Australia, therefore, decided to find a solution to this concern.

Each “Seabin” works as an underwater trash skimmer and has the ability to catch up to 90,000 plastic bags, 35,700 disposable cups, 16,500 plastic bottles, and 166,500 per year which can therefore if used in a lot of places this can help to make the oceans cleaner which can have various of positive effects on the climate. “Seabin” has launched in Sydney and has the goal to soon be operating in 100 cities by 2050.

The introduction of the “Seabin” is a great step towards cleaner oceans, however, the issue of pollution itself must also be tackled in the long run. We currently live in a world of waste with single-use products and fast fashions which increasingly creates more trash, which then is dumped into the oceans. Therefore, a more sustainable way of living is essential and the “Seabin” itself is not enough.
