When Spontaneity Meets Creativity: My Behind-the-Scenes Music Video Experience

Last week, I found myself in a quite unsuspected situation.

A close friend of mine, a well-known DJ (Lum!x) enough to represent our little Country (Austria) at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, called me on Thursday morning with an unexpected question: „OI mate — I am in Lisbon, do you have time tomorrow?” First, I thought like “Oh god, this is going to be one of those all day all & night drinking experiences with him.” But to my surprise, it was something different.. he produced a new song and needed someone to shoot content (Behind the scenes videos and pictures for that) — and of course I agreed to join for this opportunity.

Luca and Me

The new song, called “Troublemaker,” features a kind of “chart storming” trail from a man (the singer) caught in a wild love affair, seeking to regain the heart of the girl who’s turned his world upside down. Luca (the DJ-Friend), alongside a German artist from “The Voice” and another DJ, came up with a very nice summer song that fills the room with electronic party vibes.

For equipment I brought with me was — an iPhone, a gimbal, and a fancy digital camera. The filming startet at 06:00, I met the team on the windy beach of Guincho. Despite the rainy and stormy weather, the group, flown in from Germany, was hyped with energy. The videographer and owner of the agency, a master of his craft, worked his magic, making even the cloudy skies part of the “artwork”.

Our route continued to Cascais, where the music and singing along to the song got us some stares from locals and a few children who were eager to ask what we were shooting here. “Vídeo de música” I said with my broken Portuguese. Later, we continued our way to the next spot — a rented villa provided the perfect backdrop for the funny storyline and cinematic shots that would follow, especially the vibrant party scenes, including throwing people in the ice cold pool, which led to some super cool impressions.

What was so nice about that day, was the creative spirit that was in all of the people involved there. Further, I was granted the freedom to explore my style of photography and videography, all while stepping out of my comfort zone.

But what does this all have in common with the DTSI-Class? Well, in my opinion it combines a few things we learned so far. From sketching a storyboard, to improvising on the equipment but also coordinating with so many people. All in all, a super inspiring day.
