Design Thinking Spring

I visited the Brooklyn Museum and saw an incredible piece of art. “The Dinner Party” is an influential feminist art installation made by Judy Chicago. I picked this artwork to express my feelings about the strength of women exhibited in the art. The display commemorates the successes and influence of women in the past and now. Also, this display provide a huge respect to the dominant image of women nowadays which was a great idea.

The installation consist of a large triangular table adorned with place settings to honor and recognize 39 important historical women. This display ensures that no two women are given the same attention. The table’s symbolic and respectful layout, representing the journey of women across history and into the future, is achieved through its multiple circles of place settings. Each woman is represented by a unique porcelain portrait plate and an embroidered runner. At the exhibition, I have seen representations of Virginia Woolf, an English writer, and a leading figure in the Modernist literary movement. Additionally, I saw Georgia O’Keeffe, an renowned American artist who embraced a modernist style in her artwork. I draw great inspiration from both of these women since I love art.

The table contains three distinct sections that correspond to specific historical eras: antiquity, Christianity through the Reformation, and the American Revolution through the Women’s Revolution. All three sections feature symbolic imagery and motifs related to the lives and achievements of women, demonstrating themes of femininity, empowerment, and resilience. From my point of view, the artwork makes a strong feminist statement, challenging traditional male-centered chronological narratives and taking back the lives and fates of women in history.

The artwork acknowledged and praised the contributions of women. It can be associated with the design thinking process, specifically human-centered design and systems thinking. Design thinking values creating solutions with a strong emphasis on the needs and experiences of people. The Dinner Party is a human-centered artwork. It is a celebration of the diversity and complexity of women’s lives. While developing the artwork, artist Judy Chicago treated each place setting as a tribute to a significant historical figure. Each woman was recognized for their personal achievements and characteristics. Design thinking promotes taking into account the broader systems and contexts in which solutions function. The artwork explores the systemic injustices and biases that negatively impacted the lives of women. The interconnection between historical events and societal norms are emphasized by this art installation, encouraging viewers to think deeply about the foundations of how gender operates within structures and systems. When considering this artwork from the standpoint of a design thinker, people will be able to have a greater appreciation for the depth of meaning it contains. That meaning is something that can be linked to today’s gender issues and the ongoing fight for social justice.
