Remember the time when email was fun? Yes, yes, the time when you wrote letters, shared fun trivia and whatnot with friends(!)

Email today, though, is a big part of our lives for not-so-fun reasons. And this has led to a number of productivity articles, books and even apps to help you master this beast.

So I decided to humour myself by making this guide to managing the inbox, based on what I usually do:

Visualisation made on Whimsical

This visualisation is made on the Whimsical diagramming app that I am so in love with :) Below’s the link to the browser-version of the flowchart, complete with the ability to zoom, move around, click some links, and best of all, the ability to export a high res image or print this out if you’d like!

I write a lot about email (and the movie, You’ve Got Mail). How it comes in the way of my life, how email marketers are insensitive to the recipient’s experience. I write so much about it, that I wrote a story on how much I’ve written about it.

Having written so much about email, the only natural next step was to start my own newsletter. Enter Design Tuesdays — an experiment in reverse social media, where the letters are self-contained stories. Aimed at generating conversations, the way letters were originally intended to, there’s no “read more” — but there is a “reply”.

Check out the archives here, and if you like what you see, follow along on medium and / or sign up. Better yet, join the conversation.
