What’s your story?

From epics to grandma’s bedtime tales, storytelling is as old as the human race.

Hi there!

When I was a child, my grandmother would narrate stories at bedtime to help me fall asleep. But that wasn’t my only source of stories.

Stories are everywhere — we read and hear stories through books, magazines, newspapers, TV shows, cartoons, movies…

When we talk to people and ask about their lives, we are asking them to tell us their stories, and as we take selfies to post on our favourite social media platforms, we are broadcasting our own stories.

This need to share our stories is as old as the human race. The oldest stories that have been passed down for generations are in the holy texts of every religion on the planet. And even before the written word, we began to share stories through paintings.

Novelists, playwrights, photographers and filmmakers exist because humans love stories. And advertising agencies have long exploited this human love for storytelling, to tug our hearts and purse strings!

Design Thinking encourages businesses to use storytelling to understand where they fit in the larger picture of the customer’s life story.

  • The Empathy Map tells the story of a person — what do they think, feel and do during a typical day. What are their struggles?
  • The Customer Journey Map tells the story of what that person goes through while interacting with a product and / or service. Does the product and / or service help solve their struggles?

There are several templates for these maps, and guidelines prescribed for how to use these templates. It may seem strange to add sticky notes and fill up a canvas. But filling up a wall isn’t the point of a canvas or template. The point is to unravel a story.

What stories are you working on?

Warm Regards,
