Fjord Faces: Miksu Vaittinen

The Fjordian talks saunas, work staples and his fondness for Finnish design

Role: Operations Director, Asia Pacific

Studio: Melbourne

Years at Fjord: 3

How did you end up in this role? What do you love about it?

I started in Fjord Helsinki, moved to Hong Kong to build it up, and then woke up sipping coffee and eating smashed avos in Melbourne while wearing all black like a good Fitzroy resident should.

For me the best thing is the ability to build and grow studios in new cultures. I love the feeling when you are able to empower designers to do their best.

What’s been your favorite part of working at Fjord?

The people, and the ability to have impact. We are fortunate to work with some of the most intelligent designers and curious minds in the world. I keep being amazed, time and time again, about the impact we are having to the world around us.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature — I spend a lot of time on the water or in the forest. It is my meditation and my way of re-charging myself. The other thing that inspires me is Finnish design. It’s purity in purpose combined with great design is something to admire and [strive] towards.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

Quite a few people, but at the moment, I would love to sit down and talk about bold moves and big plans with Elon Musk and Richard Branson.

What’s the weirdest or funniest thing that’s happened to you on the job at Fjord?

When I was starting in Hong Kong, I had a long chat about Finnish Sauna culture and my love for it with local Accenture leadership. Later on, I found out that in HK, Sauna is usually considered something of a more sinister and frivolous place…

What are your three office must-haves for a successful workday?

Good coffee, noise-cancelling headphones and lunch at 11:30, all of which are non-negotiable.

What are your three favorite things to do on the weekend?

Currently fly fishing, archery and Sunday brunches.

How does your role as Fjord affect your life outside of the office and how do your hobbies and passions outside the office affect your job?

This is a interesting question. Obviously working with Fjord has taken me around the globe and given me the possibility to chase my passions around in different locations, but moreso living and working in different cultures has given me a better understanding and appreciation of where I am.

We’re always looking for smart, talented and passionate people like Miksu. Want to join the team? See all open positions and find out more about why it’s good to be a Fjordian here!
