Code with Creativity
Should Designers code or not? This is one of the most common exchange of views in the design industry and that’s what our class also started off with. Design and Development are not two separate terms. Both are related to each other. Design and Development are explorative domains in which there must be a perpetual state of discovery and learning. Without Design, Development is useless and vice versa. Getting insights into some new terminology was quite helpful.
Everything is interrelated to each other just like hardware sketching, UI Prototyping, etc. All the current technology that we have been using, a more advanced version though, all of it was invented, tried and tested in the early years itself. The history of ideas was started off with Mother of all Demos, explaining the concepts about computers in detail and how it all started off. All the trending tech-based interfaces which we humans are so used to were all there from the early days, whether from Bill Buxton’s collections or even the very first chat-bot ELIZA. It is really fascinating how we are using the same technology, now in different forms and variations.
If we date back to the inventions made in this field, it connects to similar devices that we are using today. A few of them which caught my attention is the Cross-Pad XP (1998), which is now being used in the form a Wacom. On the same ground, the Data 2000, Seiko (1983) is the same as the Apple watch and other Digital Watches with LCD screens.
Discussing about ELIZA, it reminds how chatbots were talked about even before they got popular during the recent times. Conversational UIs are one of the most popular ways of interacting. It is easier and faster. Going back through the inventions of technology, earlier actions were performed using type and enter commands as compared to now where they happen with one click. I am keen on learning the programming part through the histories and the way it is done in recent times. Starting off with command lines, understanding about the basics and syntax of coding, and further solving puzzles helped me delve into the logic and the language behind programming. “Everyone should know how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” — These words mentioned by Steve Jobs in one of his interviews about coding struck me the most. Inspired from these simple words.
I am keen to delve into the deep knowledge of programming and how it will help designers in the future ahead. As I think designers who know how to code can understand better in terms of design process as well in terms of technology. I am excited to develop a finished project with the help of programming. Hence, I am looking forward to this studio.
