Breadcrumbs are a secondary navigation system that shows a user’s location on a website or app. Breadcrumbs enhance usability by enabling a user to click back to the top level pages that incapsulate their current position. The term came from the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale in which the main characters create a trail of breadcrumbs in order to track back to their house. The term doesn’t actually describe the real idea behind a breadcrumb, which is to show the current location within a hierarchy.

Breadcrumbs should never be used as a replacement for primary navigation. It’s purpose is to help the user know where they are on a multi-level app or website. Breadcrumbs usually only work on websites and apps that have a linear and hierarchical structure with defined categories. It is often found on ecommerse sites because of the many product categories they hold.
