VR Paper Prototyping: Where do I start? Draw the horizon

A blank piece of paper for VR Paper Prototyping feels daunting, so make your first mark be the horizon line.

If you’re hesitating about how to begin sketching on your 360º template, draw a horizontal line. Just do it. Find the vertical center, and draw a horizontal line all the way across.

Just like real life, the horizon is in the middle.

You can also try drawing your horizon line above or below the center of the page. This will give a different feeling of perspective to the user. Try it out in a VR headset with just the horizontal line to see quickly the perspective changes as you move the horizon line away from the middle of the middle of the page.

Lowering the horizon (as viewed in GoPro VR Player)

Drawing the horizon line lower makes the user feel like they are higher up, or that the furthest thing they can see is closer to them. For example, standing on a city street you can’t see as far into the distance as you can standing in an open field.

Raising the horizon (as viewed in GoPro VR Player)

Drawing the horizon line higher makes the user feel like they are in a valley (or in a jar), or that the furthest thing they can see is much farther away from them.

I made this 6-up sheet to practice sketching on. You really can’t get much detail with these for VR Paper Prototyping, but they’re good for practicing your sense of scale. They still work for taking photos and using them in Google Cardboard or the GoPro VR Player on your computer to test them out. Check out the

In case you haven’t read my earlier post about VR Paper Prototyping, check it out to understand how get started with this 360º image method of VR paper prototyping. Once you’re ready, start practicing with this 6-up sheet to get comfortable with rapid prototyping using this method.

As usual, please leave me feedback about your experience using this method of VR Paper Prototyping!
