It is no wonder that more and more clients are aware of the importance of a good logo. They might not care enough about branding and brand identity yet, but logo? Logo has become a new standard.

How to meet clients expectations? On one hand, we can all agree that they can be quite stressful because they usually don’t really know what they want, on the other hand, we know that we need to keep pushing out only high-quality work.

How do we balance both? There are many tricks we can use during the logo design process that might help us get our work accepted easily, like custom type, simplicity, symmetry, and negative space, but one trick stands out the most. The power of the golden ratio.

Why golden ratio?

Golden ratio goes by many names. Some call it the golden mean, others phi, then you have people who call it the divine section, and people who call it the golden cut, the golden proportion, the divine proportion, and tau.

You can call it whatever you want as long as you use it correctly.

Don’t be afraid, I won’t be bothering your creative soul with mathematics and definitions of the golden ratio. For me, it is important that you know only two things.

How a golden spiral looks like.

Golden ratio spiral and its squares

And how it is represented in nature.

The manifestation of golden proportions in nature

Stop, take a moment and look at the above photos. No I mean it, take a really good look. Be honest with yourself, how do you feel watching them?

There is something special about those photos, right? It could be, that we, humans, like golden ratio because it is in nature all around us, and we grew accustomed to it, or maybe, just maybe, there is something more to it.

Whichever the case, it is a great tool to use when we want our logo, our typography, and our president be pleasing to the eye.

Logo in golden proportions

Designing an appealing logo using golden spiral is really simple.

Step 1:
Sketch out your logo idea.

Step 2:
Draw golden ratio squares, circles and spiral by placing similar squares one after another in one direction, drawing circles in all squares and making an arc going through all the squares.

You can also skip this step and download the golden ratio vector file I’ve made for you.

Step 3:
Use golden ratio elements to outline your sketch. (do not resize any shapes!)

Step 4:
Colorise your logo.

Who doesn’t know these?
