Designersđ¤alk #22 with Rahul Goradia (Product Designer at Zomato)| PHASE 3 [IND Edition]
Date: 3rd January 2021
Rahul is currently working for Indiaâs one of the best FoodTech company i.e âZomatoâ and with that, heâs sharing his design knowledge through his workshops and social media. In this talk, he has shared his opinions regarding the internships, first design interview, design process and etc.
Q1. How did you get into design, and how would you describe yourself as a designer?
I didnât know what design was until I was graduating from school, my dad pulled up the newspaper one day showing me an ad for IIT Design school.
I spent the next 4 hours reading about design and realised this is the profession I would live for. Always had a passion for creating and problem-solving ever since I was young.
Q2: What advice do you have for someone making their first portfolio?
I think young designers just dump all their projects onto their portfolio, my advice would be to keep your top 3 works.
Ensure you get plenty of feedback on it too so you know itâs gone through multiple rounds of review and enhancements.
Q3: You landed an internship at Zomato. How did you do that or any steps that you want to share to land into a design internship?
First, ensure you have a complete portfolio and resume when you are applying. Thereâs no point applying with a half baked resume.
Next would be to try focussing on adding skills which other candidates are not most likely to have. You need to step away from the pack and focus on yourself
Q4: How youâre consistently improving yourself as a designer?
I always ask for feedback. Itâs the best way to improve as a designer. Ensure you keep reading and learning whatâs trending too!
Q5: How to prepare for the first UI/UX interview?
The best practice is to believe it or not, do a mock interview with a friend the night before your interview. Itâll get you in some good practice and great laughs before a tense day.
Remember to remain confident and speak only what you know! You donât want to be caught off guard answering questions about something you donât know
Q6:Describe your design process and what important methods youâre following while solving the design problems.
I spend a decent amount of time doing my research and validating what problem I need to solve, I think brainstorm and then create visual mocks which I then ask my peers and colleagues for feedback.
Once all changes are made I ensure to check data or interview users to learn how we could enhance the design solution we have made
Q7: How to train your UI/UX skills when youâre just starting your design journey?
Learn from others. The best way to learn is YouTube and to keep doing projects and creating design. One of my favourite designers Johnny Vino designed an app for 2 years straight, imagine the skill level which he had grown from
