Anubhuti is working as a Product Designer for one of India’s biggest online store i.e Flipkart. In this talk, she has shared her opinions regarding:⁣

1️⃣ first UX portfolio project;

2️⃣ type of UX information would be needed before working on UI;

3️⃣ checklist for a UI/UX interview & etc;

Q1. Hi Anubhuti, nice to meet you. Let’s start with a short background story. How did you get started in design?

I would say me being in design is the most enlightening accident of my life.

I think being in design is the most beautiful accident that has ever happened to me. Growing up I wanted to be an engineer but being dyslexic it was tough getting through the entrances of good engineering institutes but thankfully due to good drawing skills I landed in an architecture college. From there on my interest started to blossom in design and started to do my masters in User experience Design and Design Research, and since there is no looking back.

I often say I didn’t choose the design, design chose me 😅

Q2: How to choose your first UX portfolio project?

I would start by redesigning the product that you love and use the most. You will be the “SuperUser” of the product and hence you would have a good grasp of the user flows, pain-point, and various other constructs which will help you to empathise with the users and UX is majorly about understanding user problems and solving them with a seamless experience.

IMO better you understand the problem better you can solve it.

Q3: What’re the things we should check before sitting for a first UI/UX interview?

I think it’s always a good idea to do your homework before you sit for the interview. Know the:

  • product well,
  • its pain-points,
  • its UX gaps,
  • what’s working, what’s not working, and if possible some ideas around how you can solve for what’s not working as the interviewer is seeking to know your problem-solving process, and being prepared definitely gives you an edge.

Also personally, I try to find out more about my interviewer and address him often by name ( since the sweetest sound is some is their name) and ask them a lot of questions this way you are able to make participants in the process rather than a mere spectator.

Last but not least, take pride in your work, have confidence in yourself and your skills.

And breathe….. It helps you keep calm and focus better✌🏻

Q4: How would you define UX to a non-designing person?

Gosh! Tough one but let me try!

UX design is a process by which you understand the user’s problem and strive to solve it with a seamless experience

Q5: Which Indian product you think has a great UX apart from Flipkart and why?

My answer will always be Flipkart. I am paid to say so.

JFK but to be honest I love Netflix a lot, the experience is seamless and immersive, and feels like they are keenly listening to their users to acting for them.

The other product I am really liking nowadays is Figma, it has exponentially increased my workflow and enhanced communication across teams

Q6: What kind of UX information would be needed before working on UI or visual designing?

Well, everything you can possibly gather. Before one even put a dot on the paper one should all about:

  • what problem they are solving,
  • why are they solving,
  • whom are they solving for,
  • what are competitors doing,
  • how are they solving the same problem,
  • any research or studies on the problem,
  • what does the data say,
  • what is the brand style guide,
  • any design system that the company follows etc.

Should be able to internalize the problem, understand user’s pain-point thoroughly and then start to solve for it.

Q7: Would you want to share a few tips with folks out there who want to join as interns or a UI/UX or product designer at Flipkart?

Well, At Flipkart hiring is a four-tier process including:

  1. Job briefing,
  2. UX tasks,
  3. Portfolio round, and
  4. HR round.

If think you are a good designer or have good design skills, just go ahead and apply experience no bar 😎. We welcome everyone alike.
