Trusting invisibility is about building transparency and accountability into the things we can’t see.

What will matter most to businesses, societies and our environment in the future?

When we first set out to explore the future, we gathered insights from experts across the arts, humanities, design, technology, and industry. Two ideas cropped up again and again: trust is decreasing around the world — and invisibility is increasing.

Technology is increasingly layered across, and hidden within, every interaction of our lives. More and more is happening behind the scenes: data generation, algorithmic computation, and decision-making. It’s becoming harder to grasp the wider effects of individual and corporate actions based on things that are invisible to us. How can we balance the benefits of invisibility with the importance of transparency?

The key here is trust. Trust is more important than ever, and companies will need to build and maintain it. We believe trust can be designed. But how? How can we build trust into invisible products, services, and decisions?

Trusting invisibility is about building transparency and accountability into the things we can’t see.

“Trusting invisibility” is the first of many themes we’ll be exploring inside Futures — our playground to explore, experiment, and create. Look out for lots of conversations, far-fetched ideas, events around the world, and experimental prototypes around the ideas of trust and invisibility. Be sure to follow us here on Medium, and keep an eye on our website for events in our global studios.
