This week, we asked our vino aficionado at Waldorf Astoria Beijing to share the most distinctive wine labels she’s come across. We’re finally going to know whether it’s ever justified to judge a wine by its label.

My list includes what I consider to be the most distinctive wine designs (and some of them even won major design awards). Give them a try if you get a chance, even if the wine is unremarkable, at least you’ve still got a great looking bottle.

Champagne Dom Perignon 2003 Vintage

Designed by David Lynch, Hollywood filmaker.

Berlucchi Franco Ziliani Franciacorta 2007

Italy

Alvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat

Spain

Darioush Winery Darius II 2015

Designed by Auston Design, United States

Lazarus Wine’s Braile Wine Bottle

Spain

Inkwell Wine Shiraz 2007

Designed by M/A/S/H, inspired by the Rorschach inkblot test.

Bewitched

Designed by Stranger & Stranger, California.

Trinitas Cellars Mysterium Mendocino 2009

Designed by Great Lakes Label, United States. This wine bottle features a QR code on the back

Designed by Eduardo Del Fraile

Meeta Panasar’s Conceptual Wine Bottle

Created as an homage to the Op Art movement and to the work of Joseph Albers.

Helvetica Wine Bottle

Designed by Wild Wild Web Studio and produced by Bodegas Barreda, Spain.

For most of you when you’re browsing the wines at your closest Cheers or April Gourmet, you look for countries, name, and the grape variety like whether it’s a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Pinot Noir. And maybe if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all your choices, you might end up choosing a good-looking wine label. There’s more to wine labels that meets the eye. Some of the best wines have the most simple label designs whereas the trend for new world wines appears to have some of the most eye-catching labels.

We hope you enjoyed our guest post for this week. Thanks again for writing! If you want to contribute to designSTEIN, get in touch on our WeChat account.

Share on your moments and give your circle a taste of the most well designed wine bottles!
