Valencia Design Capital 2022
During two thousand twenty-two, Valencia has been the Design spot from the world and Spain.
An exhibition of Juli Capella, Jaime Hayon, Ramon Ubeda, Tachy Mora and FAD, the unmissable spots.
The World Design Organization, what was ICSID, or International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, was founded in 1957 by a group of industrial design organizations. The first Icsid Congress and General Assembly were held in Stockholm, Sweden where the Icsid Constitution and first definition of industrial design was officially adopted.
Industrial design is the process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. This distinguishes industrial design from craft-based design, where the form of the product is determined by the product’s creator at the time of its creation.
By then membership had grown to 23 members from 17 countries. The name of the organization was also changed to the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. On the occasion of Icsid’s 50th anniversary, World Industrial Design Day was launched to highlight the impact of industrial design on economic, social, cultural, and environmental development. It has since been celebrated every 29 June around the world.
The World Design Capital® designation was born as Torino piloted the first year-long program meant to celebrate the accomplishments of cities that have used design as a tool to reinvent themselves and improve citizens’ quality of life.
In 2017 the organization was renamed The World Design Organization, changing its objectives from manufacturing to design process, collaboration, not just products, services, and experiences.
World Design Capital® is every two years, recognizes cities for their effective use of design to drive economic, social, cultural, and environmental development. Through a year-long program of events, the designated city showcases best practices in sustainable design-led urban policy and innovation that improve quality of life.
The initiative to turn València into World Design Capital 2022 comes from the civil society, from a group of people (entrepreneurs, professionals and members of designers’ associations) that dreamt with the chance of Valencia becoming a world leader, and they passed on this hope to companies and authorities that showed their support.
Previous WDCs include Torino (Italy) in 2008, Seoul (South Korea) in 2010, Helsinki (Finland) in 2012, Cape Town (South Africa) in 2014, Taipei (Taiwan, Chinese Taipei) in 2016 and Mexico City (Mexico) in 2018, Lille Metropole (France) in 2020. Valencia (Spain) holds the title for 2022 and San Diego-Tijuana (USA/Mexico) has been awarded the designation for 2024.
Valencia was chosen by the committee Luisa Bocchietto, James Anderson, Mauro Porcini, Frédérique Seels and Anne Stenros.
During the year, different projects and events had been placed. Events include workshops, exhibitions, conferences, and meetings.
“Mapa del Disseny (Design Map) is a project born of the need to give a voice to these projects,” said the World Design Capital Valencia 2022 team. “Live cartography is underway in Valencia via its galleries, restaurants, museums, cafés, hotels, shops, creative spaces.”
Following the website https://www.wdcvalencia2022.com/ we can check a lot of the daily and monthly activities. A lot of exhibitions had been placed in Valencia, I will point out some of them. I just visited a few of them.
The exhibition «¿Por qué soy así?» an exhibition in which 120 everyday objects, explain how design improves our lives, at the Center del Carme Cultura Contemporània in Valencia. Juli Capella’s work as a curator has been to group the objects according to tens different strategies, as the exhibition during the Madrid Design Festival: ‘¡Funciono! Porque soy así’.

We can’t miss Jaime Hayon: InfinitaMente, from 22/09 till 16/04/23 at CCCC. The first large-format retrospective exhibition on the work of Jaime Hayon to be held in Spain. The exhibition addressed the artistic career of Jaime Hayon, Premio Nacional del Diseño 2021, and an international benchmark, offering an approach to the artist’s personal universe and his creative process from a didactic approach.
‘Jaime Hayon: InfinitaMente’ shows a selection of the most emblematic works of this creative and personal creator, both in the sphere of installations and art pieces as well as products for companies. The show will also include works that have never been presented in Spain, such as ‘Masquemask’, ‘Mesamachine’ or ‘Mediterranean Digital Baroque”, as well as large-format paintings and sculptures.
At la Nau we can find the exhibition of El millor disseny de l’any., from FAD and ADCV, a selection of more than forty projects that are ordered following the four itineraries Beauty, Sustainability, Inclusivity, and Technological innovation.
At CCCC we can find Scenes from the near future of Tachi Mora and the participation of Arqueha, Cambres Design, Silvia Ceñal, Cierto Estudio, Clap Studio, Julia Esqué, Rocío Gambin, Alejandra Gandía-Blasco, Eli Gutiérrez, Marc Morro, Nahtrang, Oiko Design, Isaac Piñeiro, Jaume Ramírez and Raw Color.
