This week, my Saturday in Valencia included:
- Wake up late after only having gone to bed at around 4:00.
- Have a leisurely Almuerzo (having slept through Desayuno) at home.
- Stroll along the Mediterranean Sea towards a brunch date with friends. Have your husband join in on the stroll so he gets to see the sea, too.
- Have Comida with friends from the US and UK, talking about all manner of things and stay long enough to enjoy sobremesa.
- Stroll home along the sea shore and realize this is your life now.
- Take the bus into the city center to go to an American style barbecue hosted by your Romanian classmate from Spanish class.
- Stop at a shop along the way that advertised at the bus stop and, without a fuss, buy some bras that fit (a really big deal and something I could rarely do in the US and didn’t expect to be able to do in Spain).
- Sit on a terrace, sipping wine and eating yummy food, with your Spanish class friends, one of whom brought her husband (who is from Chicago). All immigrants: 3 Chicagoans, 1 New Yorker, 1 Romanian (who came here from Canada), and 1 Polish/French woman (who used to live in Chicago).
- Experience sobremesa for a 2nd time in one day, enjoying everyone’s company until after midnight, and learn new things about how Spain works.
- Give up on a cab to get you home and head for the metro instead, and enjoy the quiet walk from the station as you make your way home.
- Discover the joy of a heavy comforter on a crisp night as you climb into bed to rest up for tomorrow.
