Mountains are generally seen as obstacles to overcome, and reaching the peak would suggest a sense of achievement. It becomes a symbolic sign of the ambitions, dreams and hope of the old woman in the photo. The translucent mountain suggests that it is a mere illusion on the old lady’s part, and that her hope of climbing the peak of the mountain is faint and diminished, due to the frailty of her body.

As we are aware of the size of the actual mountain, for it to appear relatively small in the image suggests a greater depth between two planes, which infers greater difficulty for the old lady to achieve her younger days’ dreams.

This suggests a sense of regret of what could have been and what the old lady could have achieved had she followed her desires and overcome the obstacles that stood in her way, instead of choosing to succumb under the pressure that society has imposed on her.
