With Covid hitting the world, Cryengine is taking a step back to move forward.

Cryengine 5.7 LTS Released

I have covered this game engine in my previous podcast episode and was considering it as an alternative to unreal engine and unity. Even with the new Raytracing and mobile plans, things did not pan out well for crytek.

There was even speculation of them getting acquired by Tencent which might be a good thing so as to allow them to get resources they need to continue to develop the engine.

Right now I feel there is no good alternative besides the two Big U engines Unreal and Unity.

AMA with Cryengine

So cryengine had a recent AMA to talk about the future of this game engine and it’s upcoming features for Cryengine 6. They do know the weaknesses of the engine such as not being easy to use, and hopefully they will make it more appealing to developers to come onboard.

Some of the features announced we more to stabilize the engine and not much on mobile or the raytracing features shown.

Cryengine AMA with Head of Product, Arto Ruotsalainen

I have a soft spot for Cryengine back in the day it was one of the more premiere engines that had high visual fidelity. But Sadly it did not see the success like Unity and Unreal. Its still a distant 3rd even though they sold some of the source code to lumberyard, which failed to materialise in their studio games and just went open source.

I can safely say that Cryengine is in a better place this year with their LTS. Though I am not sure if they will come back stronger with the recent huge launch of Unreal Engine 5.
