Products are sold all across the world. You can find it anywhere, be it in your house or your office building. There are millions, and even billions of products of various shapes, sizes, functionality, models, and types. Some products have the same functionality. Some are similar and yet different in some other way. Some are good, and some are bad.

Yup, products are easy to find the marketplace, but do you know what’s hard to find?

A Great Product.

A great product should be able to solve your specific problem, it’s your ultimate source of solution for your dilemma, and once you bought it, it leaves you with a sense of euphoric from the dopamine rush in your veins.

The gratification that comes from a happy customer is the highest level a great product can accomplish.

The Definition

According to the business dictionary, a product is defined as ‘a good, idea, method, information, object or services created as a result of processes and serves a need or satisfied a want.’

Products can be both tangible and intangible. Real products are physical products that are quantitative. On the other hand, intangible products are qualitative such as services, copy-righted products, patents, and trademarks.

The motivation behind the invention of products and services in the marketplace is to enable customers to solve their problems and needs. As more products are emerging in the market, customers’ expectations toward the products have shifted as well.

The Common Characteristics

A great product is a product that stands out from the competition and thrives over time. It should be able to deliver a great sense of purpose and provide immeasurable values to its consumers.

Here are some of the common characteristics of a great product:

  1. The ability to solve real-life problems

A great product should have a characteristic that can solve their customers’ problems. The main reason that a consumer buys a product from you is to enable the products to help solve their problems, improve on their job efficiency, and get their job done faster.

For instance, the invention of smartphones, such as iPhone and Android, has completely revolutionized our daily lives.

The smartphone is muti-functional that serves as a communication platform, stored our personal and business data, and also a source of entertainment in our daily lives.

Without a doubt, the invention of the smartphone has tremendously improved and altered the life of humankind.

2. The company’s value

Aside from solving the consumer’s problems, consumers are also influenced by the company’s value when purchasing goods. Based on a study, the millennials these days are demanding the companies to be more ethical and socially responsible. Research shows that nearly seven in ten US millennials actively consider company values before purchasing a product from an enterprise.

One case study that you can look into is the Body Shop company. The Body Shop is very conscious of its contribution to society by fighting for animal protection, human rights protection, and environmental protection. Its values and beliefs have powerfully shaped the company itself.

About 83% of Body Shop’s regular customer says they would choose the company who take social and environmental issues seriously.

Thus, it’s more likely for consumers to purchase from The Body Shop as they shared similar visions and beliefs. In other words, this shows that the company’s value influences the consumer’s purchasing behavior.

3. Intuitive and user friendly

One of the criteria that consumers are looking for is a product with a simple, intuitive, and user-friendly’s design.

The design of the products should be intuitive and not too complicated. A right product — should provide a solution to consumers and not adding more problems to their lives.

According to the quote from Apple Design Guidelines,

“A UI that is unattractive, convoluted, or illogical can make even a great app seem like a chore to use. But a beautiful, intuitive, compelling UI enhances an app’s functionality and inspires a positive emotional attachment in users.”

it emphasized the simplicity of the product’s design.

Back with aesthetic design and simplification, users can understand the product quickly. A beautiful and compelling UI helps to grab the attention of the users for a longer time.

Simplification enables consumers to understand to product quickly, and also; it can provide a fantastic customer experience for those using the product.

4. It’s long-lasting

Lastly, it should also be durable. The organization needs to implement the right product that should be able to survive every case scenario that you can imagine. For physical goods, it’s good that the company builds long-lasting products.

One of the factors the company needs to consider is the product’s obsolescence. If businesses failed to take into account this factor, the products become less valuable over time, and this might drive consumers to another new product offered by the competitors.

Most of the companies, including small-medium company, only think of maximizing profits in the short-term, without considering the long term strategy. If your products are low in quality and made from cheap resources, your customers will know. They will eventually ditch your brand and move to another company.

Final Thought

Building a great product is a process and not a destination. Along the way, there will be obstacles, hiccups, or pitfalls. However, organizations must persevere when building an excellent product that brings value to humankind and might impact the overall lifestyle of humanity. A great product, just like beautiful memories, will leave lasting impressions in your mind.
