What is SLAM
SLAM also know as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping is a technology which understands the physical world through feature points. This makes it possible for AR applications to Recognize 3D Objects & Scenes, as well as to Instantly Track the world, and to overlay digital interactive augmentations. This can be done using a range of algorithms that simultaneously localise and map the objects.
How SLAM works
For the machine to understand, the device’s sensors collect visual data from the physical world in terms of reference points. These points help the machine distinguish between floors, walls and any barriers. Google’s AR platform, Tango, uses advanced SLAM to interact with the surroundings. SLAM largely makes use of mathematical and statistical algorithms.
Importance of SLAM
SLAM localizes an unknown environment and navigates through spaces for which no prior map or GPS signal is available. SLAM is best applicable for situations with no prior reference point.SLAM has significant usage in AR applications. When virtual content reacts rightfully with real objects within the surroundings, Augmented Reality is a success.
Product Review Revisions
My product incorperates SLAM mainly through the scanning of the fridge. For the experience to work properly you need something to scan the interior of your fridge and send the scanned version to you app so that when you are at the store and needing to remember what exactly was in your fridge the app would then create an AR 3D version of your fridge at the convience of your finger tips.
