SLAM and Tracking Technology

SLAM stands for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping. This technology is utilized in almost all XR applications because of its ability to continuously map a users environment without having knowledge of the environment before hand. This is accomplished with GPS data, and it’s refined as the user explores the environment. Apart from creating the mapping system, SLAM also lets the device know its position within the map.

How it works

SLAM systems work by tracking a set of points in a space, when the device observes enough of these points, it can calculate how far they are from the device. However, SLAM only works when the environment is unchanging so it would not work well to track movement.

Application

SLAM is used for many XR applications and is one of the technologies used for self driving cars.
