As humans we’re connected online all the time and modern technology has destroyed all the boundaries between work and play, and corrupted our private & social lives. We now take our work with us to our beds, and have multiple inboxes that trigger constant disruptions, which is causing our stress levels to increase and puts more pressure on our brains to multi-task, around the clock.

Studies show that on average we look at our smartphones 221 times per day and are exposed to many adverts. Just how many adverts is up for debate; Consumer Reports puts the number at 247 per day, whilst the Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that we’re bombarded with 3,000 commercial messages in a single day.

Digital Detox in itself is a movement to adjust your interactions and habits with technology, to improve productivity and re‐energise your state of mind. At Despark, we wanted to deep dive into the science behind human behaviour and our ability to receive and digest information, so we organised a panel discussion called ‘SparkUp: Digital Detox’ to do exactly that. For the panel we brought together successful startup brands and influential speakers with different backgrounds, opinions and specialties. And to join the conversation we invited like-minded marketers, business founders and tech-enthusiasts along.

Together at SparkUp: Digital Detox, we explored the shifts in human behavior thanks to modern technology, and what that means for marketers when communicating with their audience. You can catch a glimpse of the topics we ran through on the event highlights video here, and we will also be exploring the key takeaways on our Thoughts page over the next couple of days. Join us for the next event.

On the panel at SparkUp: Digital Detox, February 2016:

  • Rhys Little- Commercial Director at Despark (Mediator)
  • Paul Nuki- CEO of StepJockey
  • Sara Gordon- Head of Brand & Creative at Bloom & Wild
  • Anastasia Dedyukhina– Founder of Consciously Digital
