When someone says midwest most people think of cornfields and the state of Ohio. Most don’t realize that the Midwestern region also contains part of the mitten state. The state of Michigan has many diverse cities and activities for everyone to enjoy.

Detroit is the top city that comes to mind when someone says Michigan. Detroit is located in the southeast corner of the state. Largely known for the bankruptcy that occurred in 2014, the city is now growing with young professionals flocking to the city.

Detroit was founded in July of 1701 by a French explorer. By the 19th century, the location of the city made it a prime industry port. With the rise of the automotive industry, Detroit quickly became home to the rapidly growing automotive industry.

Detroit may be largely known for the automotive industry but it is also known as home to two music genres. Motown is the most known music genre to have been born in Detroit. Founded in 1959, Motown helped shaped the artist and music that is loved in today’s culture. Techno was the genre of music that originated in Detroit. Emerging in the 1980s techno is a style of music that is still popular in today’s culture.

Sports are gladly welcome in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is one of few cities that has four major sports team; Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings. Just this past year the city built the Little Cesar Arena that is home to the Red Wings hockey team.

Arts and entertainment in Detroit are very important to the city and to the economy of Detroit. Whether it is walking down Greektown or heading down to Fox Theater for a show, you are surrounded by activities to do.

Traveling to Detroit may seem scary. But the city is growing and working hard to change its reputation. Take a chance on the “Comeback City” and explore the city that is growing.
