A beautiful small town with on a Great Lake is exactly what our next destination is. Only natives of Michigan are familiar with this small town, but those who do love the history and culture that surrounds the city.

Port Huron, Michigan was founded in 1814 after the War of 1812. Originally the city was established as a United States fort, Fort Gratiot, at the base of Port Huron. In 1857 Port Huron became part of the great state of Michigan. The shipbuilding and lumber around the area caused an influx of immigration in the 1850s.

The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse can be found in Port Huron. The lighthouse was built in 1829 to replace the original after it had been destroyed by a storm. The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse stands at 84 feet tall. The lighthouse continues to guide ships down the St. Clair River.

Port Huron prides itself on its culture. The city is home to many museums including the Carnegie Center — Port Huron Museum, Huron Lightship, Thomas Edison Depot Museum and Fort Gratiot Lighthouse. Every year the Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race is held in the city. Citizens start in Port Huron north of the Blue Water Bridge.
