The best sights in the world can be seen by driving north rather than south. Most people think north and think cold, while others think north and think of beautiful lakes and national festivals.

Traverse City, Michigan is the next stop on our tour. Traverse City is the largest city in northern Michigan with a population of over 14,000 people. In 2009, Traverse City was the number two small town travel destination and there are plenty of reasons why.

Traverse City was founded in 1847 by French colonists as they discovered Grand Traverse Bay. It wasn’t until 1872 that the city began to boom. In December that year, the railroad system reached Traverse city opening it up to more settlement and industry.

Today, Traverse City is known nationally by the National Cherry Festival. This festival began in 1925, originally known as the Blessing of the Blossoms Festival to draw travelers to the northern part of the state. During the festival, guests can enjoy the infamous Michigan Cherry in all forms. From pies to bake goods to drinks each year brings new activities and foods to the well-known festival.

Another well-known festival that happens during the month of July is the Traverse City Film Festival. Here people can travel and get lost in the cinematic treasures. People travel from all over the world to experience the festival.

If you are looking to enjoy one of the countless festivals or to just relax in a small town, Traverse City is the place to go. Whether you are a snow bunny or snowbird the ever-changing seasons allow for something everyone can enjoy.
