ICYMI: Deputy Secretary Trottenberg visits Cherokee Nation, signs historic infrastructure compact
Tahlequah, OK — Last week Deputy U.S. Secretary of Transportation Polly Trottenberg traveled to Cherokee Nation to participate in the signing of the first ever Tribal Transportation Self-Governance Compact with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr.
This historic compact means that Cherokee Nation will have more decision-making authority to use federal funds for transportation and infrastructure initiatives that better connect residents and visitors — a model that will maximize the impact of investments from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Read more about the historic compact here.
Deputy Secretary Trottenberg also had the opportunity to learn about electric vehicle initiatives the Tribe has already undertaken. USDOT and the Administration have made expanding EV infrastructure in Tribal and rural areas a top priority as these drivers — who spend more time on the road than their urban counterparts — have the most to gain from the cost-savings associated with EV adoption. As part of that effort, USDOT released its first Rural EV Toolkit this spring, which is an invaluable resource for rural and tribal communities as they navigate the electric vehicle transition.
