Secretary Pete Visits the City of Bridges

Last Thursday, Secretary Pete traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as part of the Getting America Back on Track tour. During his trip through the “City of Bridges,” the Secretary talked about the way the American Rescue Plan had helped get Pittsburgh back on track and how the American Jobs Plan will help modernize the region’s infrastructure and create good-paying jobs.

Coffee with Pennsylvanian Leaders

Secretary Buttigieg kicked off the day with a cup from the Gasoline Street Coffee Company, where he was joined by Senator Bob Casey, Representatives Mike Doyle and Conor Lamb, and Mayor Peduto. While there, the Secretary discussed the Department’s priorities and how the federal government could work with local authorities to meet the region’s infrastructure needs.

Setting Sail

After a productive meeting, Secretary Buttigieg embarked on a trip down the Allegheny and Ohio rivers to view some of the iconic structures along Pittsburgh’s waterways, including the Emsworth Locks & Dam, the McKees Rocks Bridge, and the West End Bridge, guided by local officials.

Impressed by these engineering marvels — which continue to operate over nine decades after their construction — the Secretary also spoke about the need to invest in bridges, transit, and inland waterways to ensure Pittsburgh’s infrastructure serves the needs of its residents for another century.

Speaking from the Monongahela Incline

Secretary Buttigieg then held a press conference at the peak of the historic Monongahela Incline, where attendees were treated to a scenic overlook of Pittsburgh’s vast forest, rivers, and the city itself.

Secretary Buttigieg explained how the American Jobs Plan would directly address these problems by expanding access to broadband internet, building more electric vehicle charging stations, improving affordable housing options, and investing in research and technology.

Several other speakers followed including, including Karima Howard, a bus operator and member of ATU 85.

We also thank the Biden and Harris team for the 30 billion in emergency transit operating assistance in the American Rescue Plan…This funding has saved our jobs. This is absolutely…an honor to say we have not had any lay-offs here in Pittsburgh, and that is truly a big deal.

Meeting Transportation Workers and Leaders at the Airport

Secretary Buttigieg transitioned to a different mode of transportation on the last stop of his tour: aviation. At the Pittsburgh International Airport, the Secretary met with local labor leaders to discuss how the American Jobs Plan will create millions of jobs to modernize and build a new generation of American infrastructure.

Afterwards, the Secretary greeted and thanked his fellow DOT employees from the local area before flying back to DC ― including this four-legged little friend.

Through the American Jobs Plan, Secretary Buttigieg and the Biden Administration are committed to ensuring that the promises and opportunities of our country are extended to all Americans and to future generations.
