Why is streaming so popular

Mar 19, 2020 · 6 min read

Every year the streaming industry makes a huge leap in its development. More and more people are involved in this area, more and more companies provide different types of service. And it seems that this progress will never stop.

At the moment, the public opinion about streaming is twofold. Some consider streaming to be a huge opportunity for self-realization and making money, while others consider it to be a new “youth disease” designed for thousands of youngsters to stupidly kill their time and health while sitting at a computer for hours and just watching a stranger.

However, no one can deny that streaming has become a new super-popular sphere of entertainment.

We, at DeStream, have analyzed this issue, and today we’ll try to understand the reasons for such popularity and answer the question of what streaming is in our opinion.

There are many reasons why some people are doing, and some people are watching streams. We’ll consider those that have had the greatest influence on the development of the industry.

We’re going to start with the reasons why people watch streams.

Why people watch streams

The first reason is the huge level of interactivity.

Imagine you’re a fan of a particular music band. You attend their concerts (if they are held in the place you live), their music is constantly playing in your headphones, you recommend your favorite songs to your friends, and so on. Now imagine that your favorite band arranges meetings with fans 3–4 times a week, where they answer different questions, tell interesting stories and do what they love to do… they sing. At these meetings, fans who share your interests come together, communicate with each other, share impressions and just have fun. It would be awesome, wouldn’t it?

The same can be said about streaming. Many popular personalities (not only streamers) are doing streams during which they play games, sing, watch movies, etc. Participating in this and having the opportunity not only to observe, but also to communicate with idols is a great way to spend time for a lot of people.

The next most important reason for us is the opportunity to watch professionals live.

The vast majority of people in the world are fond of a particular kind of sport. However, practically none of them has the opportunity to constantly watch how their favorite athletes train.

Thanks to streaming, e-sports enthusiasts have a huge advantage over the rest. Many eSports players are streamers. They broadcast their training games, give advice to the audience and show the master level of skill. Let’s all agree that if Mike Tyson shared his workout routines several times a week and gave advice to his fans, none of them would have missed that opportunity.

Last but not least is the ability to satisfy the need for communication.

There are more people who are shy about communicating openly than you can imagine. Some get embarrassed during a live contact, some are loners by their lifestyle, and some simply feel more comfortable in an anonymous environment. It can be difficult for such people to communicate and get in touch with others.
Although with the advent of the Internet, forums, thematic sites and social networks this problem has for the most part been resolved, people are still looking for ways to communicate with others in more comfortable ways.

It can be a great idea to go to some Internet-forum and start chatting with people who share your interests. Watching streams is much more interesting, the level of intimacy and connection is crazy high and there are a lot more emotions and more activity than in social networks or forums.

Why people do streams

Now let’s move on to our second main question — why people do streams. In our opinion, there are three main reasons for it.

The first reason is, of course, the money.

Streamers are some of the best influencers in the World. And this is all due to the already mentioned high interactivity level. Viewing streams and communicating with popular personalities, any person begins to experience an emotional connection with them. This opens up unprecedented opportunities for marketing campaigns.

Remember the examples above? If people often talked with Mike Tyson, then his advice to purchase a particular product or service would be taken much more seriously than anyone else’s.

The second reason is accessibility and convenience.

This time let’s also start with a little example. It is very difficult to become a Hollywood star. First — you need to be incredibly talented and hardworking; Second — if you’re not from Los-Angeles, you will have to move there. And, finally — if you’re not from the USA, these problems become 10 times harder to solve.

Now let’s think about what is needed to become a streamer. A computer, a webcam, and a microphone, that’s all… Yeah, it’s way easier to become famous and rich by doing streams than by becoming a famous artist or sportsman.

A lot of talented young people have already managed to succeed, while having literally nothing but natural charisma and some equipment. It is this accessibility that makes the streamer profession so popular.

And the third reason is the universality of a streamer’s profession.

They say that there are no closed doors for talented people. However, it will be quite difficult for a good poet to become, for example, a bank employee of the year, because there are other skills that are valued in the financial industry. In the streaming industry everything is completely different: here, people of any profession and talent can create a successful career.

Musicians sing on their streams, gamers play, artists draw, and so on. In streaming, anyone has the opportunity to show their best side and, thus, earn a living and even become world famous.

Streaming is a living, constantly moving and changing environment, and absolutely anyone can become a part of it. It is the accessibility and interactivity of this industry, in our opinion, that provides it with such popularity and such volume of annual growth.
