AWS Summit Amsterdam 2024

Today was my first time at the AWS Summit Amsterdam 2024. I’ve been skipping this event for years, for some reason, and I realize now that was a mistake. It’s packed with brilliant minds sharing their experiences and ideas about cloud, especially AWS.

My Takeaways

AI getting more focus than ever especially with extended collaboration to Advance Generative AI Innovation with NVIDIA. I might be a bit of a slowpoke, but it was awesome to learn about Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q (analogue of a co-pilot).

If you were to ask me about the top three talks that stood out to me, I’d point out these ones:

Navigating the journey to serverless event-driven architecture

David Boyne’s talk was really insightful, covering everything about event-driven architecture, from its benefits and drawbacks to the best ways to use it. He talked about different patterns and shared some really useful tips for making it work. More information here.

Advanced integration patterns & trade-offs for loosely coupled systems

Dirk Fröhner and Gregor Hohpe during presentation underscored the challenges posed by distributed systems, covering topics such as out-of-order delivery and handling partial failures. Through their collective expertise, they provided valuable insights into common design trade-offs and practical design patterns. Moreover, their discussion on integrating these patterns into cloud automation offered actionable strategies for enhancing application resilience and performance. Overall, the dual presentation provided a comprehensive exploration of the intricacies and solutions within distributed systems architecture. Their resources for the presentation are here.

Advanced serverless workflow patterns and best practices

During the talk, Benjamin Smith dived into AWS Step Functions and Workflows, serving as a knowledgeable guide for maximizing their potential in production environments. He discussed key considerations such as selecting between Express or Standard workflows, and provided insights into combining them effectively. Additionally, Benjamin explored the usage of Map states, parallel states, and nested workflows, offering valuable architectural best practices and repeatable patterns for building efficient workflows while optimizing costs. Summary

It was an amazing conference and it was great to see and meet friends. Now it’s time to dive into all these materials which were shared by speakers.
