DEEP FAKE

Technology has been moving at a rapid speed providing a score of advancements for all of us — but at the same time some very disconcerting pitfalls have emerged too. Users can elongate legs, remove pimples, add on animal ears and now, some can even create false videos that look very real

One such development has been Deep Fakes that seems like a super fun technology also has the ability to do some serious harm to our society.

So,In this blog we will talk about how we can mitigate the worrying aspects of Deep Fake ?

Let’s begin with our blog journey

What are Deep fakes ?

Deep fakes (fake) are synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness.

It can be involved to explain the whole idea so check out this video to catch a glimpse of what Deep Fakes are.

DEEP FAKE

How do deep fakes work?

A deep-learning system can produce a persuasive counterfeit by studying photographs and videos of a target person from multiple angles, and then mimicking its behavior and speech patterns.

Barrett explained that “once a preliminary fake has been produced, a method known as GANs, or generative adversarial networks, makes it more believable. The GANs process seeks to detect flaws in the forgery, leading to improvements addressing the flaws.”And after multiple rounds of detection and improvement, the deep fake video is completed, said the professor.

According to a MIT technology report, a device that enables deep fakes can be “a perfect weapon for purveyors of fake news who want to influence everything from stock prices to elections.”

There are 4 Deep Fake Apps mostly used—

1. Zao —

Zao is the latest app which has gone viral in China for its ingenious capability to create deepfake videos within seconds. You can choose a video clip from its library which includes scenes from Chinese drama series, Big Bang Theory, popular Hollywood movies, and more. Within a few seconds, Zao creates a seemingly authentic deepfake video which frankly looks natural and indistinguishable from the original video.

2. Reface —

You might recall one of our reports where we showcased a deepface app named Doublicat to help you make fun GIF memes. Well, the developers of Doublicat have renamed the app to Reface, after Reface AI.Reface AI is the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) behind the scenes. To use the app, all you need to do is capture your photo and then choose the gif that you want to use.

3. Face Swap Live —

Face Swap is not entirely a deepface app, but it does let you switch faces with your friend or a photo in videos. You can record videos, put stickers, take photos and directly post on social media. What I like about this app is that, unlike other face swap apps, it’s not that static and there is some degree of movement on the face. There are also 3D effects, interactive face warping with several masks and effects. All in all, if you are looking for a deepface app, Face Swap Live can be a great Zao alternative for the time being.

4. MyHeritage —

Another viral deepface app you should try out is called MyHeritage. The app’s Deep Nostalgia feature gained popularity among social media users as it lets you animate old photos. To use the service, all you have to do is upload an image and press the animate button.

Deep Fakes Applications —

Blackmail —

Deep fakes can be used to generate blackmail materials that falsely incriminate a victim. However, since the fakes cannot reliably be distinguished from genuine materials, victims of actual blackmail can now claim that the true artifacts are fakes, granting them plausible deniability. The effect is to void credibility of existing blackmail materials, which erases loyalty to blackmailers and destroys the blackmailer’s control.

Movies —

As deep fake technology increasingly advances, Disney has improved their visual effects using high resolution deep fake face swapping technology. Disney improved their technology through progressive training programmed to identify facial expressions, implementing a face swapping feature, and iterating in order to stabilize and refine the output. This high resolution deep fake technology will be implemented into movie and television production — saving significant operational and production costs. Disney’s deep fake generation model can produce AI-generated media at a 1024 x 1024 resolution, which is much greater and produces more realistic results than common models that produce media at a 256 x 256 resolution. In addition, with this technology, Disney has the opportunity to revive dead actors and characters with a quick and simple face swap; Disney can now resurrect and revive characters for fans to enjoy.

Internet meme —

In 2021, an internet meme emerged utilizing deep fakes to generate videos of people singing the chorus of “Baka Mitai” (ばかみたい), a song from the game Yakuza 0 in the video game series Yakuza . In the series, the melancholic song is sung by the player in a karaoke minigame Most iterations of this meme use a 2018 video uploaded by user Dobbsyrules, who lip syncs the song, as a template

The Massive Issue with Them —

Having worked in the 3D animation industry before I find this technology to be amazing. What was impossible ten years ago doesn’t even even require an animator any more.

Right now it’s a ton of fun watching these deep fakes, but the concerns surrounding them are real and potentially harmful.

Video could be modified to show a president declaring war on another country. Perhaps it could be modified in such a way as to defame someone.

In fact it’s been used to map peoples faces on pornography — that’s got some very worrying ramifications around privacy and defamation.

Deep fakes in Indian Election Campaign —

Earlier this year, right before the legislative assembly elections, BJP politician Manoj Tiwari used deep fake to create a video criticizing the Delhi government in multi-language. The video marked the debut for deep fake in Indian elections, however with an aim to develop positive campaigns. The manipulated video was vastly leveraged to persuade many regional migrant workers and influence masses by distributing them across 5800 Whatsapp groups.

Trump’s Video Tweet —

In an attempt to omit misinformation for the US 2020 election, Twitter has recently appended a warning label to US President Donald Trump’s tweet of a manipulated popular video of 2019. The aim of sharing the tweet was the message that was highlighted stating that the country isn’t the problem, fake news is. However, Twitter, as well as Facebook, has removed the video after getting complaints from the original video creator. Such video has forced social media platforms like this to be stringent with videos like this and tear the manipulated content.

Concerns —

Fraud —

Audio deep fakes have been used as part of social engineering scams, fooling people into thinking they are receiving instructions from a trusted individual. In 2020, a U.K.-based energy firm’s CEO was scammed over the phone when he was ordered to transfer €220,000 into a Hungarian bank account by an individual who used audio deep fake technology to impersonate the voice of the firm’s parent company’s chief executive.

Example events —

“Kim Jong-UN”

Deep Fakes of North Korean leader Kim Jong -UN and Russian president Vladimir Putin have also been created by a nonpartisan advocacy group Represent Us . These deepfakes were meant to air publicly as commercials to relay the notion that interference by these leaders in US elections would be detrimental to the United States’ democracy; the commercial also aimed to shock Americans to realize how fragile democracy is, and how media and news can significantly influence the country’s path regardless of credibility. However, these commercials did include an ending comment detailing that the footage was not real, and the commercials ultimately did not air due to fears and sensitivity regarding how Americans may react.

Solution to Deep Fakes —

There’s actually loads of behavioral changes we can make that will solve these problems. However in this post I’m going to talk about a technological solution. This is one of the few instances where I think solving a technology problem with a technology solution makes sense.

The solution is one brought to you by Bitcoin — more specifically BlockChain technology. The drawback of a computer file like an image, text file or video is that it can be copied multiple times. In fact it can be copied so many times that you can’t tell which was the original one. Simply put, it’s a problem about authenticity.

The BlockChain solved this by accurately recording the movement of a single file/set of data. This movement is verified by multiple computers on the Blockchain. If it’s not verified then the transaction or file is considered in invalid.

By doing this the Blockchain effectively turns a file into an asset because it now becomes unique. This is a huge an oversimplification of how things work but it highlights that Blockchain solved the problem of how to make a file unique. Therein lies the solution to Deep Fakes.

All video can be made uniquely identifiable via the BlockChain, so you can track it and validate it as being authentic. If it’s not on the Blockchain more than likely it’s not authentic.

Some platforms have emerged like LBRY that ‘host’ videos on the BlockChain already. There are many many things to work out with hosting on content on the BlockChain currently. Currently hosting text and images on the BlockChain works just fine, but video still poses some challenges.

Irrespective of that, BlockChain offers a compelling way to maintain the integrity and authenticity of the video. This massive advantage will certainly prove useful in mitigate the harmful effects of Deep Fakes.

Conclusion

Bitcoin started out as a means for individuals to maintain their property rights over their money. The same BlockChain principles of immutability, verifiability, transparency and encryption are the same principles that will allow us to solve problems of Deep Fakes.

It all boils down to determining if something is authentic.

In today’s weird world of weird problems including those of Deep Fakes, it looks like BlockChain could solve that and a lot more.
