DevCJeddah Augmented Reality Evening 2018

It’s a mid-summer night. The developers of Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, and Rabigh gathered at the Vibes Offices with enthusiastic startup founders and designers. RSVP’ed members new and old, by-standers who got dragged along, and tenants of the co-working space that has been our home for multiple events… We came together to celebrate the launch of the 9/10th accelerator’s latest cohort plus a fun hands-on evening of Facebook Augmented Reality.

9/10ths

Staring at our revamped snacks bar helps Ali focus before his talk.

Contrast to our usual code-heavy meetups, this evening is lite and relaxing. Ali Al-Ahmari from KAUST Entrepreneurship Center excited us with the why (job creation) and how (all-rounded coaching) of the 9/10ths accelerator. He also shed lights on the enigmatic title of the accelerator.

Imams Sa’id ibn Mansur and Ibrahim Al-Harby (rahimahumallah) have recorded the following narration with a reliable chain from the Tabi’i; Nu’aym ibn ‘Abdir Rahman that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said
Engage in trade, for nine tenths of sustenance is found therein.

FB Camera Effects

Introducing Facebook AR Studio (photo credit: Mai Alem)

After a nice 45-minute mixer (thanks to our revamped snack bar ;) ), we dive heads-on into AR Studio, a unified toolkit to create camera effects on the Facebook and Instagram platforms. A lot of us were delighted to see how quickly we created our first camera effect by putting mustaches on our faces. I’m also pleasantly surprised by the number of macs and how prepared our members were. Some even demoed new creations on the fly and we all had many good laughs.

Md demoing the clown face he made in just a few minutes

We are blessed with this wonderful community of talents and kindness. I can’t wait to see what we all create with AR Studio beyond this first taste!

Observations

  • There’s a Snap Studio designer amongst us
  • Two assistant professors came from a mountain city afar
  • AR is way more popular than blockchain in our group
  • A lot of us are participating in the #Hajj_Hackathon

Next Steps

  • Stay in the loop with 9/10ths here
