Event on Line 4
Some of y’all, seemed to be getting Error on line 4, minutes to the event, including our able MC of the day, Mr. Kelvin. He got lost haha…and so we had an MC for hire. See what I did there? No really…if you didn’t, then Error on line 4, and DevC is not an error 😄 So event on line 4…Ok, let me stop, I might just be making my own complicated puns, joke’s on me.
We had a change of Venue. The Moringa School.
Moringa School is a world-class software developer accelerator with a direct education to employment model. So simply, learn to code at Moringa school, be a World Class Developer, and get employment right after. “Learning to code has already been made easier for anyone joining Moringa School.” A huge Thank You to Moringa School for hosting us.
That said, let’s get right into how our Fourth Meet Up was like. Our line up of guest speakers included: Tonida Baraza, who took us through Redux, as a follow up to her initial presentation at the 3rd Meetup, and Mboya Berry a Ruby and Rails Software Developer at Ongair, speaking on Realtime API’s.
Tonida continued on Demystifying Redux, and if you missed the first presentation, please find the presentation here. Tonida demystified the need for Redux and we learned particularly why objects in Redux should be immutable. Want to learn more? Here please, happy learning. 😊
We also had Mboya Berry, who took us through building RealTime API’s using Feathers JS. Now Feathers JS helps you build prototypes in minutes! Can you imagine that? It also helps create real-time backends and REST APIs in days, which are ready for production. Mr. Berry demonstarted to us a real-time chat application built using Feathers JS and that was pretty awesome! You’ve got to get your hands dirty on this one, ey?
And…he wasn’t done. He was also presenting in the Mini Bar Camp Session. Berry introduced us to the Mpesa Fees Bot (@mpesafeesbot). Yeah, you guessed it. Ask “How much is it to send 100”, it tells you. Ask it “Thao”, it gets you 😁, and tells you how much you need to send for “Thao” though it doesn’t reply back in Sheng 😜 That would be awesome...right? It’s available on Telegram.
Next we had Ken (from Moringa School) who presented on an AI driven Music Player app he created that reads your mood and suggests a playlist for you. So you could be coding and tired, and when you open the app, it will get a picture of your facial expression and play you some soothing music to level up your moods. Ken, if i got that wrong, you could add that as a feature. 😎
Next was Thomas Nyambati, a DevOps Engineer from Andela, talking about using Terraform to beef up your DevOps. So first, What is DevOps? DevOps is a software development and delivery process that emphasizes communication and collaboration between product management, software development, and operations professionals. Think of it as an easier way of developers and operators to communicate easily and deliver on projects. DevOps helps automate everything. Code testing, workflows, infrastructure…anything between development and production. Development and Production environments match; i.e Automating the software delivery process. So Why Terraform? Terraform helps you write infrastructure as code, to increase operator productivity and transparency. It is an open source tool that allows you to define infrastructure for a variety of cloud providers using a simple, declarative programming language and to deploy and manage that infrastructure using a few CLI commands.
Feeling lost? Checkout this guide on Terraform, and Thomas will definitely be back to expound on this topic. Good?
Clifford Gor who was also our MC for the day, gave us a tip of the iceberg on React VR. “React VR lets you build VR apps using only JavaScript. It uses the same design as React, letting you compose a rich VR world and UI from declarative components.” His demo was really cool...you should have been there! Pun 😄 Two puns actually 😂 You can only see it to believe it.
And that was it. A lot of valuable information and thought exchanges good enough to get to learn something new, change your way of thinking, find inspiration and even unlearn how you do things. Will see you at the next meet up? Hope so!
