Our 5th time — DevC Nairobi
September 2017 brought us to our 5th Developer Circle Nairobi Meet-up.
So glad we started right at the nick of time….
… and followed through with amazing conversations on Terraform and Conversational bots.
Before that, we called function random and it returned Lemaiyan! …as the MC of the day!
Meet our speakers of the day. Thomas Nyambati and Henry Onyango.
Thomas is a DevOps Engineer at Andela and he came back to expound on Terraform! 🤓 If you missed our last meet up and didn’t get to read the article, drop everything you’re doing…and go right here. If we’re on the same page, Thomas’ presentation on Terraform is available on our DevC Nairobi Speaker Deck page and all the other presentations from our previous meet ups.
To summarize on Terraform, there are three problems that terraform seeks to solve. Complexity of changing technologies, their Flexibility and Maintainability. The challenges posed by these problems is to Create, Update and Replicate the infrastructures and avoid the manual processes. Your solution, Terraform. Introduce Infrastructure as Code. Fair enough. There are many resources online where you can read extensively on Terraform, or better still connect with Thomas and I’m sure he’ll be happy to assist for free at a kind of $5 per question 🤣…just kidding!
Next was Henry Onyango, aka Henry Dru. He is an Engineering student with a passion for web and mobile as well as love for Artificial Intelligence. He also loves art although sadly, he can’t draw or paint 😬, but he can code, and that’s like the same thing, right? He drew a conversational bot
Weell…moving on swiftly. Henry’s presentation on Conversational bots was like a full semester, shrunk to a 20 min presentation, and that’s what awesome looks like. 😎 Bots came about with the human need to converse. 78% of users use 3 apps or less, with messaging apps topping the list, hence the explosion of chatbots. Ok, and now, I’m about to brag…
Oh well, I was just a mere tester of the bot Fifi’s Restaurant. It was built by Henry and I got to test it 😜 It’s a pretty cool bot that you can test out on your Messenger App and here is the link to their page . Go on to Messenger and search for Fifi’s Restaurant and I’m sure Henry will be glad to receive feedback regarding the functionality and possible improvements. Don’t expect to get some food yet, because it’s still in beta 👨🏼💻 .Henry’s full presentation is also available on Speaker Deck and you can go through it if you follow this link.
The Mini Bar Camp!
Let’s talk more bots!
We had Ayub from Kejabot. Be sure to expect him in one of our next meet up as a speaker to take us through the bot. KejaBot notifies you when a house you are looking for is posted in any of the many Facebook groups, so no more house hunting because house hunting has been done. All you need to do is pick a house and move in. 🚚
