Why we started a blog

My Mom asked recently why millennials feel the need to share everything. It’s funny she said that because not long after, I had an idea to write about our business. For the sake of her point (not everything is interesting to everyone), I’m going to do my best to bring you the most creative, specific, and not-boring business blog that you’ll hopefully glance at and share with your cool aunt, the one who makes the candles. Here it goes.

When Corey and I got married, we also started a company together called *Corelley Ventures. I was freelancing at the time and wanted to do more with my clients regarding design, social media marketing and marketing strategy. Corey was interested in building web and mobile apps. We knew that building a business would be tough, and we’ve learned about real costs and rewards that keep day-to-day operations running. We want to share those experiences with you.

Who are we?

My name is Kelley. I’ve been a participant in Nashville’s startup scene for the past 6 years. I used to produce and write a blog called Southern/alpha focused on startups and high growth companies in the South. Since then, I’ve worked with a few notable startups/technology companies, mostly within marketing and sales roles.

Corey is a software developer, project manager, entrepreneur and graduate of Nashville Software School (first class). He worked at LiveSchool, an ed-tech startup here in town for about five years before cofounding Corelley Ventures.

We share a common story with (quite possibly) millions of other entrepreneurs. What makes our experiences unique?

What you’ll probably read about if you choose to keep going:

  1. We are married. I bet lots of people start companies with their spouses, right? If what you just read sounds like a nightmare, that’s okay. It’s a great fit for us, and that’s what matters. Most of the stuff we post here will reflect our business, but it’s coming from the specific perspective of additionally being bound by law (and love).
  2. We are based in the U.S., and our experiences are going to have delightful mid-western, north-eastern, and southern tones. I’m from Kentucky, and Corey is from Vermont. We both settled in Tennessee which always seems like a good idea in the fall.
  3. We are building a small business from scratch y’all. We’ll have tips that startups can use, and we obviously have a background that fits well with a startup mindset. We won’t write as much about venture capital/funding, building a rocket, or adding more scooters to the already large pile of scooters at the sidewalk nearest to you. We do build things for other people though that will be for high-growth companies (hence, Developed For Scale), and we will write about common issues that founders face: importance of customer feedback, attracting the right clients, hiring/firing, and many other things, which I will decide on later.

Who are we writing to?

  1. People who want to start their own business, and haven’t yet.
  2. People who have started their own business, and are looking for connections, stories and life lessons from others.
  3. People who are thinking about starting a family business, and want to know how others make it work.
  4. Working parents, and those seeking stories regarding work/family-life balance.
  5. People who are interested enough to read down to this point.

One last thing…

If you like our stuff, please share our posts, and leave us comments. We’d love to hear your stories and thoughts on each subject we share.

*Edited to say that in 2020, we decided to rename our agency Pronghorn Software. More on that later.
