Code of conduct

The purpose of our Community Code of Conduct is to ensure that all participants in the Developer Circles Abuja community have the best possible experience. We are all here to help each other learn, grow our skillsets and have a good time!

  • Be friendly and welcoming
  • Be considerate
  • Be patient
  • Communicate effectively
  • Stick to professional conversations

Community code of conduct

The Developer Circles Abuja Code of Conduct covers our behavior as members of the community, online or offline (meetups, workshops, hackathons …). As a developer community, diversity is one of our huge strengths, but it can also lead to potential miscommunication. To that end, we have a few ground rules that we ask people to adhere to, to ensure that The Developer Circles Abuja community continues to be an excellent space in which everyone is efficiently communicating, collaborating, and advancing.

We are simply asking each one of us to act with others as we wish to be treated personally. Below are some quick tips that we believe you are already familiar with most of them :)

  • Be friendly and welcoming. We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to, members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, color, immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability
  • Be considerate. Realize that our community members — online and offline — have their own culture, etiquette, and norms, and be respectful of them.
  • Be patient. Communities are often built on volunteer time both from participants and organizers. It is possible that your question or suggestion might not receive an immediate response. Be patient and consider the norms of the community. One reminder ping is welcomed, many reminder pings in rapid succession are not a good display of patience
  • Be respectful. Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It’s important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. We expect members of the community to be respectful when communicating with each other, as well as with people outside the Developer Circles community
  • Communicate effectively. We don’t all speak the same language at the same skill level. Clear communication can help to avoid misunderstandings, as can remembering that our interpretations of words can be different depending on our backgrounds. Having context is important. It’s better to ask for clarification than to make assumptions. Disagreements, social and technical, are normal, but we expect participants in the group to resolve disagreements constructively — so please avoid flamewars, trolling, personal attacks, and repetitive arguments
  • Stick to professional conversations. The topics exchanges as part of the community are mainly educational & professional. Any political, religious or misappropriate posts will be banned automatically

In addition to this Code of Conduct, all Developer Circles Abuja events are governed by the following policy. All attendees, speakers, sponsors, and volunteers, including the event organizing team, are required to follow the following policy.

Organizers are expected to enforce this policy throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Policy

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. Sponsors are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, sponsors should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material. Meetup organizing staff and other volunteer organizers should not use sexualized clothing/uniforms/costumes, or otherwise, create a sexualized environment.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the meetup organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact immediately Developer circles Abuja team and let them know.

Organizers will be happy to help participants contact security or local law enforcement, provide escorts to an alternate location, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the meetup. We value your attendance.

We expect participants to follow these rules at our all of our event venues and event-related social events.

Definitions

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, age, regional discrimination, political or religious affiliation
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment
  • Deliberate misgendering. This includes deadnaming or persistently using a pronoun that does not correctly reflect a person’s gender identity. You must address people by the name they give you when not addressing them by their username or handle
  • Physical contact and simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like “hug” or “backrub”) without consent or after a request to stop
  • Threats of violence, both physical and psychological

  • Sustained disruption of discussion
  • Unwelcome sexual attention, including gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior
  • The pattern of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others
  • Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease
  • Deliberate “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without their consent except as necessary to protect others from intentional abuse

  • ‘Reverse’ -isms, including ‘reverse racism,’ ‘reverse sexism,’ and ‘cisphobia’
  • Reasonable communication of boundaries, such as “leave me alone,” “go away,” or “I’m not discussing this with you”
  • Refusal to explain or debate social justice concepts
  • Communicating in a ‘tone’ you don’t find congenial
  • Criticizing racist, sexist, cissexist, or otherwise oppressive behavior or assumptions

Diversity Statement

We encourage everyone to participate and are committed to building a community for all. Although we will fail at times, we seek to treat everyone both as fairly and equally as possible. Whenever a participant has made a mistake, we expect them to take responsibility for it. If someone has been harmed or offended, it is our responsibility to listen carefully and respectfully, and do our best to right the wrong.

Although this list cannot be exhaustive, we explicitly honor diversity in age, gender, gender identity or expression, culture, ethnicity, language, national origin, political beliefs, profession, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and technical ability. We will not tolerate discrimination based on any of the protected characteristics above, including participants with disabilities.

Reporting Issues

If you experience or witness unacceptable behavior — or have any other concerns — please report it by contacting us via clicking on the post option and selecting the report to admin as shown below.

After reporting a post, a representative will review the incident, follow up with any additional investigation, and make a decision as to how to respond. If the person who is harassing you is part of the response team, they will recuse themselves from handling your incident. If the complaint originates from a member of the response team, it will be handled by a different member of the response team. We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse.
