Hi team,

As we know the year is drawing to an end and we are sure most of us have been engaging in reflecting on some of our failures and greatest accomplishments in 2018, as a community these are some of the highlights of the year.

A Year of Building Meaningful Connections

For us as a community, one of the great accomplishment is seeing the fantastic connections that have developed within the community. These meaningful connections have fostered knowledge, skills and opportunity sharing which we are super proud to witness.

It has been a joy to see how you have taken DevC Lusaka and owned it as yours. This is evident in how you help each other in the comments and the posts that you make daily — reminding us all of the fundamental building blocks of what DevC Lusaka is all about.

A Year of Team Success

Continuing with the theme of great connections, it is exciting to highlight that some of these connections have yielded great ideas that have been successful beyond the realms of DevC Lusaka. Such examples are seeing our friends in the picture (Pendo, Wilfred and Olivier) come out third in the regional round of the Developer Circles Community Challenge and winning big. You can read up on their solution in this article:

A Year of Stories & Lessons from the Community

We also enjoyed reading some of your stories that you have shared on our publication. These stories have captured your life stories and journeys, your lessons, your feelings of being imposters sometimes and most importantly your unending belief to be better programmers or problem solvers. It’s been exciting to note that most of our writers are writing for the first time. Olivier J.M wrote a brilliant article that highlights some of the great articles written by the community:

A Year of Lessons on Being A Community For All

We know that outside of these accomplishments, there have been some failures as well. Some of these have been around themes of topics being too advanced that others feel the need not to attend meetups or the lack of community project(s) among other things. We wish we had all the solutions to these issues addressed but the best we can do is to listen to you and see how we solve them collectively as a community in 2019.

It is for this reason that our first meetup in 2019 will focus much on feedback to answer the question “What things do you want DevC Lusaka to improve on?

A Year of Gratitude For the Small and Big Things

Lastly, we wish to thank each and every one of you for being part of the community throughout this year. It has been wonderful seeing each one of you at all the 14+ meetups hosted and we hope these have had an impact in your careers as Software Developers this year.

We also wish to thank all the 1,300+ members of our online group for making Developer Circles Lusaka of the largest online communities for developers in Zambia as well one of the most actively engaged in Europe, Mideast and African regions in the last two quarters.

From all of us leads — Cynthia Mulenga, Pendo Manjele, Joseph Tembo and myself Mbuyu Makayi, we wish you a fantastic New Year.

Thank for believing in the power of community & happy coding!
