What a Developer Student Club Means to Us

Talent is evenly distributed but opportunity is not.

Following calls in April, 2018 for the establishment of developer student clubs across campuses in Africa, Students and Staff of the Computer Science Department, Imo State University, were elated. Alas! an opportunity for students of our great institution to garner requisite skills for the booming software development industry.

Our head of department was quick to draft the necessary Faculty recommendation letter required for the approval of the club. Leaders of the Computer Science student association were also very happy to send in their recommendation too.

Fast forward to June, 2018 and we received good news that our school has been selected as one of the pioneer Developer Student Clubs in Africa.

The Developer Student Clubs (DSC) program is a grassroots channel through which we provide development skills for students, towards employability. In addition to workshops, we also provide an opportunity for students to apply their newly gained skills to develop solutions for local organizations, and then provide visibility via showcases — Google developers.

Action time! On July 12, 2018, the Developer Students club IMSU held her first meetup centered on beginner steps in Web and Mobile development. Learning tracks included front/back end development, Andriod app development and user interface/experience design. The turn up was massive.

Here are some excerpts from participating students;

Before now I couldn’t clearly differentiate between various roles in software development, but following this meet up I can clearly differentiate between software development roles. More so, I think I now know the career path to pursue. - Agu Janefrancis

I got enlightened on many important software development strategies. My biggest takeaways were in front end design and Figma for UI/UX design. -Eke Chioma

Awesome feedback right ?

Going forward, we understand that software development is about problem solving. We are collaborating with local businesses to develop software solutions. We are also partnering with technology related organizations to bring more tech meetups to our School and Students. Are you a business or organization looking to partner with us? send us a mail at dscimsu@gmail.com.

The developer students club IMSU is open to every student who is interested in technology. If you are a student around Owerri or its environs, Do join our whatsapp group. You can also follow us on twitter. Do keep an eye on Github for the awesome projects that we would be pushing.

Join us today!!!.
