A blog posting from Salesforce, Stuart Leung addressed the reason why interpersonal communication skill is important in business. Stuart Leung stated, “interpersonal communication skills aren’t just as important as other skills, they’re actually the most important skills prospective employees can learn” (2016).

Content Summary

The author suggested interpersonal communication skills are important because of:

  1. Importance of customer service
  2. Tendency of individuals to work with people who have good communication skills
  3. Increasing importance of soft skills according to replacement of hard skills

At first, for the importance of customer service, customers are getting used to interacting with the company through social media even when they have to receive customer service. And, for the companies, it is crucial to provide good impressions to their valued customers by qualified professionals.

Second, achieving great interpersonal communication skills are important not only for workers who directly deal with customers but also workers who do not deal with them directly. Also, interpersonal communication skills can build up good relationships between co-workers. If it’s not, Stuart Leung stated: “For example, the stress caused by having to work underneath a manager who lacks interpersonal skills is believed to cost American companies an estimated $360 billion every year” (2016).

Lastly, many graduated students have acquired enormous hard skills, but they haven’t improved soft skills. A major point here is that hard skills will be replaced by automatic machines. So in the end, most people and author believe workers will only be in customer service department and will only be in operating automatic machine department.

Reason for choosing this posting

The major standout point from this posting was author had a similar point of view with me when it comes to interpersonal skill and soft skill. For example, the author started posting with describing facts of the unemployment rate and made an assumption of why today’s graduates are struggling with unemployment. Just like my thought, the author assumed that lack of interpersonal skills would be the main problem. As this assignment is mainly focused on soft skills at business, it was the most useful source that I would do research and study. Moreover, the author provided statistical sources to support the idea, and those convinced me more.

My Response

Just like author insisted, having a good interpersonal communication skill is really important for workers regardless of their fields, for relationships with co-workers, and even for daily conversations. I totally and strongly agree with the author that college students must improve interpersonal communication skills. Adding to that, I would like to say improvement of interpersonal communication skills would be a fair game to achieve great future career, to acquire what people need, and to receive a good reputation among people.
