Developing Developers

Game development can be a scary thing, especially since there’s so many tutorials out there that really only make half the effort. While I highly recommend keeping up with game design (perhaps on a platform like Medium), reading articles is only going to get you so far.

In order to get started, you really ought just stick with a couple of full-blown video-based tutorials. This will help you learn in a excruciatingly step-by-step way.

While Brackeys is Unity-specific, I do believe that his code explanations and design principles were immensely helpful in order to get started.

Additionally, never underestimate Unity’s own tutorials. They have a wealth of projects that delve into games that are a little more complicated then your average “hello world” type games.

Some general game design is also an essential nutrient in any budding game designer’s diet. I personally love Mark Brown and snowmaN Gaming on Youtube — they look at examples of awesome games and focus on game design principles down well.

Finally, I highly recommend reading the blogs of the companies behind games you know and love. I personally really like to read both big name companies and indie developers, like Derek Yu’s book on his development of Spelunky.

Best of luck!
