Architectural rendering of Talcott Mill Apartments in Vernon, Connecticut

We’ve written before about the impacts and benefits of historic preservation, and how Connecticut mills are being given new life with the help of dedicated teams of affordable housing professionals. One such development recently opened in Vernon, bringing a hub of local commerce from the 1800s into the 21st century.

The former mill that once turned out fine woven textiles until it was closed in the 1940s has been converted to 83 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments. Located in the heart of Vernon’s historic district, the building includes on-site laundry, a fitness room and a community room. The project was made possible with the use of 4% low-income housing tax credits and tax-exempt bonds from CHFA, as well as CHAMP funds from the CT Department of Housing, and proceeds from federal and state historic tax credits.
