US$10,000 in prizes up for grabs in Devery’s inaugural hackathon

Devery is officially launching its hackathon website, with all the information you will need to register and participate in the hackathon.

Firstly, why are we having a hackathon? We are aiming to build an ecosystem of third party applications using our protocol and the hackathon aims to help onboard teams to our toolset. Rather than opt for a ‘one-size fits all approach’ our protocol allows teams from different industries to collaborate on innovative ideas and integrate their own applications.

DeveryJS is our open-source framework for utilising the Devery protocol. This framework allows our own developers to build the applications we require in Javascript. DeveryJS was built to reduce the complexity developers face when building innovative applications utilising the protocol. It aims to cut down the amount of time spent on blockchain development, and also to reduce errors that might appear when developing with the blockchain.

The team has decided to open source this tool, in line with the ethos of the team but also because we believe there is a community out there that will be able to utilise this tool to make something innovative and useful. We will release DeveryJS at the launch of the hackathon.

The October hackathon will launch on the 2nd of October and last 2 weeks for submissions. This event will be held online, thus allowing anyone anywhere to participate. We encourage individuals and groups to participate, with a group size of 1–5 individuals being ideal. The winners will be judged by submission, and hence groups will have to share the prize money.

Prizes and Judges

Speaking of prizes, we decided to put in place a considerable sum of prizes and incentives as part of the hackathon. We have allocated approximately US $10,000 in total including cash and other prizes, with the first prize being US $3,000 in cash plus EVE, and Devery merchandise.

More importantly, we want to encourage innovative ideas, and are willing to support teams with really innovative ideas beyond the hackathon. We believe future utility of any ecosystem will be dependent on both the teams and independent developers utilising these technologies.

We also have a great list of judges, both internally and externally, who will be assisting us with the judging. We would like to thank Seema Johnson, current COO of Nuggets, Matthew Markham advisor to Axpire, and Moritz Neto from Tenzorum for taking the time to help judge the entries. Bokky, Vaibhav & Chironjit will be the internal judges.

How to enter

We have now launched a dedicated sub site and slack channel that will serve as the hub for the hackathon. To participate:

• Visit the website at Devery hackathon webpage, and join the Devery Hackathon Slack Channel
• Form teams of 1–5 individuals. You can use the #teamformation channel to find team members and form a team
• Open up a team issue in the hackathon_entries Github page
• Read and understand the documentation of DeveryJS
• Formulate your ideas and begin coding
• Submissions close at 11.59pm (GMT), October 14th 2018

For help, or any bugs that you may encounter, you can raise issues on the dedicated slack channel. Devery developers may jump in to help if it is related to to DeveryJS. Otherwise, feel free to crowdsource ideas on the slack channel.
