OpenAI launches SearchGPT, a prototype of new AI search features. Is there the beginning of the end for Google Search and current search engines?

Google's Dominance

Google has dominated the internet search for years. That's a fact. It even had its name added to dictionaries, such as merriam-webster, as a new verb, with the meaning:

"…to obtain information about (someone or something) on the World Wide Web"

In June 2009, Microsoft Bing replaced Windows Live Search taking Microsoft's share from 1.8% to 3.24%. But it went as high as 4.22%.

And while Yahoo had its popularity and reached 6% of market share 15 years ago, the average of the last 5 years won't go more than 1.5%.

Google has an incredible average of 91.4% in the last 15 years, with a clear and bold dominance on search engines.
