a brief review of terraform workshop event.

Behind the scene 🎥

Starting with 2020, we decided to make meetups more interesting by switching to a theme-based model. The first meetup 2020 was on serverless. The second one we planned for a workshop event on IAC with terraform. We did the preparation from our side. And as we were looking for an event place, luckily we got an invite from awesome friends from The Cyrcle. Also, we managed to get the qwiklabs credits for the day.

The day 🚀

We all reached the venue somehow and started the event a little late. The place was so nice. Also, The Cyrcle people (Matt and Bossk) both of them were super resourceful. They helped us set up the event. Provided us with all physical infrastructures we need: conference room, projector, wifis, boards, tables, multi-plugs.

Settled with 15+ people, we started the event with a basic intro to terraform. Raju did the warm-up talk and explained why we need IAC followed by Tara who explained basic fundamentals of terraform. Then we dive into real handons workshop.

We followed the qwiklabs quest: Managing Cloud Infrastructure with Terraform and covered the labs:

By our current assessments, the participants found it fruitful. We tried to cover the basics of why infra should be defined via code, what Terraform is and how to use it to create resources we need on clouds. Raju showcased his terraform plans written to provision the AWS services vpc, ec2…

Few days after the event, later some of the participants approached us on their terraform issues, which I personally count as a win of that day.

Improvements 😅

Honestly speaking we had two minor issues:

  • wifi: but we managed to get it working via secondary wifi and the mobile hotspot from Raju
  • credits: qwicklabs credits didn’t work as expected, lucky we had 200*3 credits with us, which we shared between participants

As takeaways: We would double-check on these for our subsequent events :)

Thank you 🙏

All the awesome people who made this event successful(audiences, venue provider: The Cyrcle friends, qwiklabs credits, and the speakers) deserve a round of applause. These inspire us with an encouragement to organize an event of such type more in the future. Thank you all.
