But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. — Matthew 4:4

The Bible presents the world of God as essential for life. We are not talking here about food which is a daily necessity. And neither are we talking about the brief life that lasts only a few decades. Eating physical food does not guarantee that we will live long. And many are means, yet they cannot prolong their existence in life. Living by bread alone is impossible. While we must supply the body with nutrients to sustain our life. If all we do is eat and drink, we are missing an important element of life.

Christ gives life more abundantly. And here we are not simply talking about the life of come. Even today, the word of God allows us to live to the fullest. By consuming the word of God, and making it part of our daily routine, we are subscribing to a life of peace, love, and happiness. The words of Christ are presented to supply all our necessities. While we may not have an answer for every situation, we shall find joy by abiding by the word of God. The power of the word of God provides strength to the weak, riches to the poor, and joy to the brokenhearted. And though, we may not have all this great blessing of this world, we can rejoice if the word of God is part of our daily experience.

This passage does not diminish the need for physical food. In this life, we are physical need among others. And God is not calling to overlook, the necessity to work and toil. God designs that we should have to work for six days and rest on the seventh day. Here, we shall have no excuse to spiritualize this text, nor minimize the need for laboring to meet our earthly obligation. We shall not live by bread alone, but bread is needed indeed. And if we need bread is needed for daily life, then the word of God is needed much more.

Every word that proceeds from the mouth of God is an instruction for us. God desires that we shall find favor and savor in his word. And as we abide and Christ and his word abide in us, we shall derive a value from his word that is unmatched by the most delightful dainties of this world. Bread alone cannot give life more abundantly. And if we make bread winning our only goal, then we are cementing our death. Yet, sadly even among churchgoers, many are neglecting the word of God. Few open their bibles. And many teachers refuse to preach the word. If we desire spiritual nourishment, Christ is telling us that we need to incorporate a word diet in our lives.

Are you spiritually nourished?

The Prayer — Heavenly Father, Feed us with your word In Jesus’s name. Amen!
