Summer 2018 — a retrospective

It’s 11:56 pm as I’m typing this on the first day of Fall 2018.

Honestly, I’m having some mixed feelings about the end of summer — on one hand, I couldn’t wait for school to start again, for everything to restart and get going now that I’m relatively recharged over summer; on the other, I’m feeling a little sentimental because summer had been great, and I really didn’t want it to be over.

This summer has been all kinds of amazing, and I say that even though it didn’t turn out exactly the way that I had wanted it to. I think I’m really beginning to appreciate how the unexpected very often turn out to define an experience more than what I planned, and I’m starting to be more ok with that; I auditioned for 2 teams that I really wanted to dance with, one of them let me in, the other rejected me. But because of that, I had nights freed up that I could spend time with friends, including my housemate for the summer, an unexpected friend that I ended up going to an international hackathon in San Jose with (but more on that in another article).

Speaking of hackathons, the highlights of my summer would definitely include the 2 hackathons I went to 3 weekends ago. They weren’t the most fun things to do at the time because they were both on Fridays and I was exhausted after a whole week of work. But in retrospect, they turned out to be really rewarding experiences and I’m glad I did them. As a quick aside, activities like these hackathons are chief reasons why I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like, but anyway…

This summer also taught me to be more realistic with my expectations and appreciative of the things I do have, because I realized I do have a tendency to romanticize and to expect more out of life than what is realistically possible.

I’m going to try my best to hold on to these lessons as I move forward into the school year.
